Your website, to be most effective and reach the greatest number of people, should be optimized – on a regular basis – for search engines. But what exactly is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
Wikipedia has a good definition:
“Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines by natural or unpaid (‘organic’ or ‘algorithmic’) search results.”
The higher ranked on a search results page, and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users.
SEO, when properly implemented, takes into account how the search engines work, how they “see” your site, what people search for, and the actual search terms typed into the major search engines. Optimizing a given website involves editing content and coding such that it increases its relevance to specific keywords.
